Sometimes, You Just Need to Simplify

I removed the dark, green background from the dove painting I shared yesterday. I found the contrast too stark and not necessarily the texture I wanted, either. But, that left me with a problem of how to incorporate green, a color I really wanted to use in this design.

I tried green in many ways: on the leafy branch, in lettering, in more subtle background washes, outlining the bird itself. Often you have to work through the “messy middle” of a painting, until you arrive at a solution that feels right.

As with many things in life, sometimes you just need to simplify.
