Watercolor’s Out, Ink is In

A snippet of Christmas art showing the top of an ornament in red, green, and gold.

Three finished designs into the Christmas collection and, while they were pretty, they didn’t feel 100% like me. I couldn’t place my finger on it. Was it the watercolor? Or the color palette?

I adjusted the colors and still couldn’t shake the feeling. So, I started redrawing one of the designs using the previous color palette, but with completely different digital brushes. Inky brushes I already knew and loved.

With that simple change, I instantly knew I was cookin’ with gas!

Art-making is personal to each individual artist. What tools do you like to use? How do you feel when you use certain colors? Do you like that particular texture? When you look at a finished piece, does your heart sing?

I needed to return to the opaque, graphic colors and textures I typically use, for the art to feel like mine. Have I shelved watercolor forever? Probably not. But deep down I know it’s not the right fit for the next collection.

You may have noticed I’m towing the line between sharing bits of new art and keeping it under wraps, so there’s some element of surprise when the greeting card collection is released. But I’ve been so excited to get back to drawing, it would be difficult to not share anything at all!

I imagine one day I’ll be more timely in sharing Christmas art, like only around the actual holiday. But for now, Christmas in April continues.
